An internal social network at GE is mimicking all the good things that people get outside in their social lives like Facebook, Linkedin. Get quick responses, connections with people they know — and coordination with people they didn’t even know were out there.
Employees were inundated with collaboration tools that were seemingly not connected to each other, for instance, they had email, telephone, video, file sharing, leadership blogs, communities, chat capabilities etc. What was needed big time was to somehow bring all those together into a single experience.
I was part of Colab right from the inception of the Idea in 2012. We partnered with a renowned Design firm which brought some great thoughts and proposals to our group. It was indeed a great learning experience to attend their workshops and meetings, where their design and sales team used to share their proposals with us. I worked closely with them for quite some time and exchanged a lot of ideas for this collaboration tool. Eventually our business took a decision of transitioning all the design and development work internally.
